Instant Recall
Band Interview by Jim Karones
While playing throughout the Chicago suburban club scene over the last few years, “Instant Recall” has done much to justify their tagline of “Chicagoland’s Premiere Party Rock Band”. This five-piece unit, featuring Tressa (vocals/ keys/ sax), Joe (guitar/vocals), Glenn (guitar/vocals), Rick (bass), and John (drums), turns every show into a cross-genre tour de force, featuring material that ranges from 4 Non Blondes to ZZ Top, and all points in between. They keep the dance floor packed and the party going all night long. I recently caught up with Tressa and Joe to get more insight into “Instant Recall”.
Jim: First of all, I want to thank you for taking time to talk about the band. You’re all veteran musicians with a lot of diverse experience. How did the band come together?
Joe: Several years ago Glenn and I started playing together in Driving With Strangers. The lineup changed often, but really came together when we added Rick and John. When we lost our lead singer, the first person to audition was Tressa. We were really impressed and knew she was the right fit for the band. When she joined we renamed the group Instant Recall.
Jim: Having both female and male lead vocals certainly contributes to your diversity. How do you go about selecting new material?
Tressa: It's all about getting a good party atmosphere going. We try to choose songs that fill the dance floor. If you can get people singing and dancing, everyone will have a great time.
Joe: We’re always learning new material to keep our shows fresh. We take suggestions from our fan base or look to the radio stations to keep current on newer material. Since we play at a wide range of clubs, we have material that appeals to all generations.
Jim: What do you feel are the band’s strongest assets?
Joe: Tressa's voice and stage presence really get the party going. She really knows how to entertain a crowd.
Tressa: The band members are all good friends, too, which makes playing together so much fun, and has enabled us to keep the same lineup for several years.
Jim: What can someone expect when attending an Instant Recall show? What impression would you like to leave them with?
Tressa: We really work at getting the party rolling, pulling people on stage to play cowbell, tambourine, and inflatable air guitars.
Joe: It’s not uncommon for people to approach us at the end of the night to comment on how much fun they had and that we’ve made their weekend. It’s good to know that we’ve done our jobs. Plus, it's all about having a rockin' good time and a few laughs, too.
Jim: You have built a solid fan base over the years, which is quite an accomplishment in a fickle business. How do you stay in touch with your fans and friends?
Tressa: We have a great web site, www.instantrecallband.com, where we keep fans updated with band news, show updates, gig photos, and set list additions. Also, we have a MySpace page, (www.myspace.com/instantrecall), and a mailing list.
Jim: In closing, I’d like to thank you again for sharing with our readers. Any parting thoughts or upcoming events you’d like to mention?
Joe: We just booked a Wedding in Joliet. We’ve worked out a great package that includes material from our set list plus DJ services. We’re really excited!
